Advantages and disadvantages of having a Bullmastiff.
The Bullmastiff is characterised as mild-mannered and powerful breed
as well as serious and self-assured one. He is afraid of nothing, and once aroused will seldom back
down.
Bullmastiff puppies (up to two or three years old) can be boisterous
and have an aversion to keeping all four feet on the ground at the
same time.
Grown-up dogs are calm and quiet and need only moderate exercise to
maintain their impressive muscle shape.
This breed is very devoted to his
family and likes to be in the center of attention. If he
doesn't get enough companionship or personal attention, he may walk
through fences just to be with people.
This breed must be thoroughly socialized at an early age so that he
learns to distinguish friend from foe.
He can be aggressive with other dogs of the same sex, and though he
may be fine with the family cat.
A Bullmastiff will become a smart
obedient dog only with the help of consistent obedience training
that includes leadership, cheerful praise, and food rewards.
If not properly socialised or trained he causes too much trouble for
an owner.
If you hesitate whether you want to become an owner of this breed or
not you may read the pros and cons of having this bred.
Pros:
- massive and powerful breed
- short easy-and-quick-care coat
- calm and quiet indoors as an adult
- makes an impressive watchdog
- doesn't need too much exercising
Cons:
- takes a lot of space in your house and car
- a heavy-weight dog who wants to sit on his owner feet and lean
his weight against owner's leg
- too much jumping when young (though many dog breeds do this
when young)
- destructive when bored or lack attention
- when not socialized can be aggressive towards people
- potential aggression toward other animals
- only a confident owner can handle this kind of breed who can
show who is the leader
- snorting, snuffling, wheezing, grunting, loud snoring
- slobbering and drooling
- gassiness
- serious health problems
- short life-span
- legal liabilities (public perception, future breed bans,
insurance problems, increased chance of lawsuits)
Unfortunately, there are more cons than pros, but you should always
remember that even the most kind, loyal, non-aggressive, smart and
easy to socialise and train breed won't be a good companion if you
do not pay attention to it or do not do it properly or in time. So,
that is for you to decide whether you are a prospective owner of
Bullmastiff breed or not.
